Old Cast Iron Gully Grating.

A small brook, know as the Rundle Beck flows through Stathern from the southern escarpment. At the Gote – the ancient watering hole by the church – the brook passes through a long culvert under Church Lane and there are two road gullies that collect storm water and feed it into the culvert. One of these cast iron gullies is marked “J Redgate Nott” “Stathern Parish 1849”
From this evidence it seems that the culvert is quite old and replaced a ford at this section of Church Lane. The culvert may have subsequently been rebuilt but retained the old Redgate gully grating.
John Redgate ran the Albion Foundry in Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham and also at Radford in Nottingham. We know that he made stoves, ranges, and grates. He applied for a patent for a stove in 1850 and also exhibited at shows and exhibitions. There is some information in the Nottingham Archives which seems to indicate that the foundry ran from 1808 until 1933, perhaps moving locations and combining with other firms.
