Trooper Albine Knapp
Trooper Albine Knapp was born in Stathern and went to school here. The 1911 census says he was then aged 17 and was working in London as a footman and valet to a retired Major. Apparently, he travelled a great deal in Germany, France and Egypt with his employer.
We have little information about his army career. The Grantham Journal said that in 1915 he joined the South Notts Hussars and was then transferred to other regiments. He was sent to France in 1917 and was twice wounded. On 22 March 1918 he was with the East Yorkshire Regiment when he went missing and his body was never recovered. He was aged 24 and unmarried. 7 months later in October the War Office informed his parents he must be presumed dead. He is mentioned on various memorials including ours at Stathern.
