Stilton Cheese Manufacture in Stathern

The picture shows a stone base of a cheese press found in a garden close to the church. It would have been used to manufacture Stilton cheese and could date from between the 16th and 19th centuries.  Note the drainage grooves used in the manufacturing process.

We know that Stilton cheese was made in the village up until WW2.  Originally it was probably made in farms for local consumption but there are records of two factories, the last of which closed down at the start of WW2 when the government banned the manufacture of Stilton cheese

The factory accounts are lodged in the Leicestershire County Records Office and show that the cheese was exported to all parts of England.
