WW2 - Lance Corporal Bert Jackson
Toft’s Hill cemetery at Stathern is a official a war graves cemetery because two second world war casualties are buried there.
Lance Corporal Bert Jackson of the Wiltshire Regiment who died in October 1944 aged 27 is buried there. It is said that he was invalided out of the army in a very fragile mental state. We know from a coroner’s report that he was admitted to a Birmingham Hospital where he eventually committed suicide. His gravestone at Toft’s Hill is made of possibly white marble and is in pristine condition. We have no other details about him, but clearly he suffered a total mental breakdown which sometimes happens to front line soldiers as they experience the brutality of war.
